Cops 'Bust' Woman After Birth in Mix-Up

Mom Delivers Child at Gas Station, Drives to Hospital

KETTERING, Ohio (March 31) - A woman rushing to a hospital to give birth hit a few stops along the way - first at a gas station where she delivered the baby herself, then when confused police ordered her out of the car at gunpoint.

Debbie Coleman, whose 3- and 4-year-old daughters were asleep in the back seat, pulled over at a gas station just after midnight Tuesday.

"I asked if she needed help, and she just leaned back in the seat, hollered a little, and I looked down and there was the baby's head," said station co-owner Lloyd Goff, who was alerted to the emergency at pump No. 7 by a customer.

Goff said Coleman "threw her leg over the steering wheel, groaned once, and the rest of the baby came out.

"She caught that baby, put it to her chest, gave me a look, like, 'I gotta go,' closed the door, put the van in gear and away she went."

A customer at the gas station in suburban Dayton tried to give police a heads-up about Coleman's situation, but a mix-up involving the license plate number had them thinking the van was stolen.

As officers went looking for her, Coleman headed for the hospital, naked below the waist and with the baby boy in her arm. His umbilical cord was still attached.

"I kept pulling over, making sure (the baby) was all right, breathing," she said.

Meanwhile, police had straightened out the license plate issue. But another caller mistakenly reported someone trying to throw a baby from a van.

Coleman said she noticed several cruisers following her before one cut her off. With guns drawn, officers ordered her out of the van with her hands up.

"I opened the door and said, 'I just had a baby' and just let them see everything," she said.

Officers sent Coleman on and let the hospital know she was coming.

Coleman was discharged Wednesday. Her 6-pound, 8-ounce son, Richard Lee Coleman Jr., remained in intensive care.

Those cops are idiots. Here she has the imbilical cord sticking out of her 'gina, blood everwhere, newborn on the seat. And what do "several patrol cops" do??

"Officers sent Coleman on and let the hospital know she was coming."

The let her drive to the hospital. Wonder if they ever considered giving her a ride, or maybe calling an ambulance. Shit and people think cell phone users are a road hazard.

What were those idiot cops thinkin?  I dunno, let me take a shot...

Hmmm, maybe they thought she's driving well, so, we can sit here and wait for an ambulance while the child possibly dies.  Or, we can wake up the three year old and put her in the squad car, then the 4 year old then this lady and this newborn child which would also take longer than driving a couple of blocks to the hospital, or we can notify the ER that they need to be prepared for the van being escorted in by police because every second is critical.  Maybe that's what thy were thinking.

Either that or they didn't want afterbirth on their seat.  You make the call.

Gee fellers, let's see.

I dunno, mebbe call for EMT's and proper medical attention as well as a vehicle designed and intended to transport bleeding and newborn humans. That E in EMT stands for Emergency. This kinda qualifies, uhhh ya think?

Naw, much more reasonable to let a bloody woman take off down the road with three, count 'em, three kids in her bloody hands.

This ain't about dissing cops, this is about nitwits making dumb decisions that endanger the lives of others.

Definately in the top ten things I can do without while riding my scooter is a woman, fresh from pumpin' out a rugrat and all it's accessories, with that newborn clinging to her kinda expecting her undivided attention, and two kids squawkin in the backseat while she meanders along down the road I'm on with a fuggin police escort.

For cryin out loud, do the math.

And ya wonder why people badmouth some cops. Textbook.

The cops are idiots!!!! They had her stopped 3 blocks from a firehouse with fulltime paramedics. And they let her drive past that firehouse to the hospital about a half mile away. I live in this area and it isn't the first time cops turned into so called medical experts and forgot that the hell there job was.

The cop probably shit his pants and didn't know what to do.

 I acknowledge that I have been wrong before and you make a compelling arguement.  However, If I am the cop and I am only a half mile away from the hospital, I am pretty damn sure that she will get medical attention faster by escorting her the few blocks as opposed to waiting for these highly trained EMT's.  It would be different if she was beside the road waiting, but she was already driving for God's sake.

Hey advanced, for the record, I'll bet most people don't want afterbirth on their seats.  I said most, we all know there are some strange folks out there.

And IndianChief.  If the fire house was 3 blocks and the hospital was half a mile, how many more blocks to the hospital past the firehouse? 2?  1?  3 at most.  Do the math and get back to me on that    :laughlong:

I may be wrong, but I don't think so, but logic tells me that I I probably would have made the same decision.   :bhi:
