Weatherman fired after on-air racial slur against King

Associated Press

Jan. 17, 2005 01:15 PM

LAS VEGAS - A television weatherman was fired after referring to slain civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. as "Martin Luther Coon King" on the air, station officials said.

Rob Blair, of KTNV-TV, was delivering the extended forecast Saturday morning when he said: "Martin Luther Coon King Jr. Day, gonna see some temperatures in the mid-60s."

Jim Prather, vice president and general manager of the ABC affiliate, said Blair stumbled when he uttered the remark, but the excuse was not enough to save his job.

"This kind of incident is not acceptable under any circumstances, and I'm truly sorry that this event occurred," Prather said.

Blair, who worked at the station for about three months, apologized during the station's 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts Saturday.

"I in no way intended to offend anyone," he said in the apology. "I'm very sorry."

Yeah right buddy  :P

He did. It sucks that he lost his job. Ya hear people slip all the time on TV and radio and it is nothing more then a slip up. On the morning KFI radio talk show the news guy slipped and said "Iraqi erections" when he meant "Iraqi insurgents"

But some groups (well, it may not be the groups themselves as a whole but the loudmouths within them) are super sensitive and are (or becoming) a more protected class. Like if you kill a person who turns out to be gay it's a hate crime but if the person is straight, eh... oh well.

Are they not both just as dead? Why should anything add to the crime?

Remember back about 30 years ago the left was crying that the right was going to bring in the thought police? They fooled a bunch of people. The thought police are on the left.

There is a black news anchor in milwaukee that was reporting on one of the many festivals that go on down at the lake-front. The festival is a native american fest called "Indian Summer". He talked about it for a while and slipped the word "Injun" in there. :ooh2:  I thought it was kind of funny and though I am Indian ( I prefer that moniker to native american) I was not at all offended. After the commercial break, this guy back-pedalled so hard I thought he was going to have a stroke! :D  Anyway, my point is this: Had this guy been a non-black, would he have gotten off scott free like he did? ??? Like I said no harm, no foul but the weather-man didn't have that luxury did he?

Yep, that's my point. Well, a couple of them. Had he been a white boy his ass would have been strung up and scalped.

One of our chapters out here is made up of Injuns and none of them would go ape shit over that. But you have the activists that get their power by dividing up into as many groups as they can.

Fuck that shit

What’s right is right and this is wrong and if we don’t watch out all our freedoms will be gone.

An old voice over talent friend of mine was working a morning radio show here in Los Angeles several years back.  He was reporting on an attempt to make the largest burrito to get a group in the Guiness Book of World Records.  As the story read, as written by someone else, he referred to the fifteen foot burrito as a "beaner".  Not having lived in LA for long, I didn't know this was a derogatory term for Mexicans.  Anyway, he was fired for reading someone else's work on the air.  The race card didn't play his way even though he is black.  I guess "justice" isn't blind, it's only watching TV.

Hopefully by pointing the way to an academic history I won't have to justify my playing fast and loose with the language to any of the more thinskinned among us.

If the PC vigilantes are lurking about, don't whine to me, I'm just the messenger.

I got two dogs. One is not a Staffordshire Terrier, she's a Pit Bull. The other is not a North American Mixed Breed, he's a mutt.

The Pit is a bitch with a big mouth. Now go ahead and call the ACLU and the ASPCA. The hounds don't care what I call them as long as they get Gravy Train.

It's all in context. During the 50's & 60's, ''biker'' was a derogatory term. Now they all wannabe ''bikers''. I prefer ''scooter tramp''.

Maldev,

While your example clearly shows what LR has referred to as the leftist thought police in action (and LR I could not agree with you more about "hate crimes"), I don't think the two incidents have much in common. The weatherman knew exactly what his comment meant. The comment in all likelyhood was indeed a slip and the punishment too harsh, but the comment was callous and classless and unlike your example, deserving of some sort of penalty.

Freedom of speech! Spend time watchin black tv black radio and see whos racist you'll hear all the classics... nigger, honky, cracker, if they can say it, they can hear it! Wake up people. Theres a huge double standard in favor of the minorities. I'm sick of if and dont mind sayin it. Try getting a municipal job in the City of Brotherly love if your white! Ive seen the well educated white man/woman get passed right by for some pretty stupid minorities.

That's the point I was tryin to illustrate.  Further, the fact the writer received no sanctions makes the sanctions even more painful.

If you remove the perceived intent of the comments, both are the same.  Both terms are consider slander by an ethnic group.  It's only because someone has cried foul louder than the problem called for that the direct action taken.

???

You seem to say that you agree that it was a slip yet you say it is "deserving of some sort of penalty."

You lost me; if it was a slip then it was a slip and nothing more. Like when a person darts into traffic and is hit and killed. The driver who hit the person deserves no punishment. There was no intent.

Now I could see an argument as to why the guy in Roberts’s example was fired. Even though he was reading someone else’s work he should have caught it. I am sure many of the people here have read, when you are reading aloud you need to read ahead of what is coming out of your mouth.

Now I do not believe that Robert example should have been fired either, I just think there is a stronger argument for his firing. The other guy just slipped up.

Did you hear Teddy “Chappaquiddick” Kennedy slip up last week and call Senator Barack Obama  Usama Bin Laden?

Now it was funny to see that SOB try to recover from the slip but I would not call it "callous and classless" and I do not think he should get in trouble for it. Now, Chappaquiddick on the other hand. That F*#ker should have gone to prison for, not into public office. But look at the people who vote for him. Same as the people who vote for Maxine Waters.

Actually LR, you can't compare Ted to the weatherman, because we have to assume the weatherman was sober. As far as to why I think the comment deserves a penalty, slip or not, he used a very well known racial epithet, in a way which would be appropriate to mock his target on broadcast television. I think the proper analogy would be if your driver was busy dialing the cell phone and struck a pedestrian, he did not intend to do it and obviously his liability is not the same as if he had, but he still bears some responsibility.

And Badcad of course he has freedom of speech, I didn't say he should be arrested. Freedom of Speech means the government won't prosecute you for making unpopular comments, it doesn't mean you have carte blanche' in what you say at work.

Occasionally Badcad says something with merit. This is one of those times. If your going to spew the kind of racial shit they do upon themselves it becomes fair game for anyone. You ever drove past a carload listening to rap. Unreal the racial content coming from that stuff. Now what if the carload is white? As sad as that is it happens a lot. Should they be punished for the racial slurs coming from their car? Nooooo, they're making some talentless dickhead tons of money so it's okay.

Stu,

I agree with your assessment of rap, but what percentage of people watching an afternoon weather forecast do you suppose are rap afficionados? I can watch porn on my TV if I choose to buy it, but would that make it appropriate to air over an afternoon news show? As far as what Badcad said, I'm not saying it's without merit,  I'm just questioning whether it's germaine to this conversation.
