KenB
I'm planning a trip up to Maine next summer, and really have no idea what the typical weather is for up there. Right now I'm thinking mid-September, and will be up there for 4 or 5 days with the wife. I understand the mosquitoes are viscous up there - I imagine they are like the ones I encountered in BC years ago (they throw back small children as being under their limit). Is there a season when they aren't as bad? How about rain? TIA
CHIEF DOC 99
Avoid the low men, hug the coast & eat much lobster.
KenB
Avoid the low men, hug the coast & eat much lobster. That's pretty much the plan. Wife flies in and meets me in Portland. Then a two day trip up to Eastport, then another two day trip down through Bangor to Portland. Wife flies home the next day.
mplate
I went through Maine in July of 96 and July of 2001. In 96 the weather was cool but clear. In 01 it rained like crazy for a couple of hours but was cool and clear after that. Hugged the coast in 96 but rode through the interior in 01. In neither case did I have a problem with mosquitoes. I can recommend Acadia National Park. Rent a bicycle built for two and see the real park that motorized vehicles aren't allowed to see. Lobster is everywhere. Even gas stations sell lobster rolls. Rode by a McDonalds that had a sign touting McLobster. Didn't stop.

A bicycle built for two in my house creates quick divorces as we are both a little commanding. Rented one in San Antonio a few years back and the female side of this relationship drove. Not a good outing! Jeff

Lobster pizza even. Actually I'm not a huge fan of Lobster - too rich for me. I'm sure they have something else that's good to eat though. Micmac
You will want to stop at a Dysarts Truck Stop, a Maine institution. Whoopie Pie is the state desert. I personally do not think you are going far enough north. The REAL Maine does not start until 30 miles north of Bangor. Aroostoock County and Washington County are my favorite places. I have ridden through there dozens of times Ken. Need more specifics PM me. Watch for moose on secondary roads.

lschultz
You think they got Chicken Fried Steak in Maine? There use to be a fellow that worked on my son's crew that was from Maine. He was always showing him some pictures and telling him places to go so now my son is talking about riding up that way.He lead the way I follow. And when I was a kid there was a fellow that moved to town that was from Maine. He had that accent.
