Ct To Sturgis Via Colorado

Recommended Posts

Making lemonade out of lemons on this trip. Original plan was to ship our bikes to Tacoma pick them up on Aug 1st and ride to Sturgis. Mt.Rainier, glacier national park and Bear tooth pass to Red Lodge were gonna be highlights. Reserved non-refundable rooms for the 7th -11th 4 nites. Then come back thru Ndak> MN to thunder Bay>Ottawa > Montreal then home Rt.7.

Unfortunately, my riding partner developed an issue with his shoulder and his trip was possibly off. We cancelled the airline and shipper and as of July 1st we were hoping that he would feel better in the days to come and we would leave from here…he doesn’t. Feel bad for him…planning for almost a year. So…

Since I’m coming home through the North and have come back from Sturgis via central states, I decided to go down to Virginia catch route 33 to W.Virginia, should be there on the 29th.

I’m gonna head through Kentucky on Ford Kentucky Parkway towards Springfield, Rt 60 in MO and pick up RT 66 in Springfield going thru Ok and TX follow to Albuquerque then to RT 550. I’ll visit a friend in Farmington for a day then head to Durango>Independence Pass>Mt.Evans and Aspen. I always wanted to go through Colorado, so this is the trip. Rt 87 to Rt 85 WY to Spearfish.

I know it’s late in the game, but If ya have any advice or inside info…holler up. Woulda said something sooner, but I’m working on plan “C” and wasn’t sure which way I was going.

Gonna leave Tuesday morn.

thx

CT

Sounds like a great trip. I live in a small town near Colorado Springs CO. It sounds like you are going to make a run through the central rockies.. but if you get into my area drop me a line at barrettken@hotmail.com.

If you're going through Durango you might want to head up to Silverton via the million dollar highway. I've not been there in years, but I remember it was a nice ride (if there isn't a bunch of road construction. The sand dunes (highest dunes in the US) is kind of cool too.. that's over by Alamosa.. but other than the dunes it's a pretty mind numbing ride.

There are a lot of nice places to ride in Colorado.. frankly I think the riding is better here than it is up in the black hills.. but we don't have any gigantic faces carved in the mountains... so YMMV.

Off the top of my head you might try this route...

Rt. 33 is a great ride through West Virginia... where do you plan to pick it up in Virginia? Are you coming down 81? When do you expect to be there? If you're just passing through 33 is a good road to pass through on....

yup. I'll be coming into Harrisonburg down rt 81, looked like a good option to get a taste of some of West Virginia riding while getting where I'm headed. I should hit Harrisonburg early evening if traffic isn't too bad.

actually it's US-550 that will get you up to Silverton. I've adjusted the map a bit.

If you have more time Glenwood Canyon is worth checking out too.

Leadville is a pretty cool old town - Doc Holiday is buried there.

I wouldn't bother with Cripple Creek unless you like to gamble. The ride out and back is nice, but the town itself ... meh..

From Woodland Park north is a nice ride out through the town of Pine... the thing is that there's a lot of great riding to be had out here.

The road to the top of Pikes Peak is paved now, so that's available too.

If you're planning to take Route 33 from West Virginia through Ohio, I'm only about 15 minutes from 33. So, if you need help, a place to stay, a cold one, whatever, let me know. Hope you have a safe trip. Sounds like fun.
