RickkciR
Damned.. I have those thoughts cross my mind all the time when a pickup is in front of me .. no taligate.. crap everywhere laying back there... or a flatbed goes by and has a spare tire just laying back there and some big pieces of wood that aren't strapped down. Or.......... you're in the hills/mountains and you come up on a logging truck.. you know.. with a stack of newly cut trees piled up high and they are moving at a high rate... always thinking... what would I do .. if ..... Micmac
I was following a "Sanford & Son" pickup last year with pieces of corrugated tin in the back, they were probably going to the junk yard to get enough for a bottle of wine, or crack rock, long story short, one of the pieces of tin flew off and just made to over my head. If it hit me I would of looked like an extra on Walking Dead" fer sure. In other news... Ralph from "Green Acres" died yesterday.

Or.......... you're in the hills/mountains and you come up on a logging truck.. you know.. with a stack of newly cut trees piled up high and they are moving at a high rate... always thinking... what would I do .. if ..... Last year, driving a car in winter on the highway, I did have to make a call to highway police to report a pick-up with flatbed trailer that just left a wood pallet (you know, those for forklift) right in the center of the way. Fortunately, I guessed this will come so I put enough space between me and the pick-up. While a was on the phone giving the license plate number to the policeman, he lost one another big piece of wood (6"x6" x 8') on the road and I could see the second one on its way to the same destination... At this time I'd think: If I or someone behind me was on a motocycle? I hate that kind of stupid drivers!
maninbox
I was flying down the freeway late one night coming home from 2nd shift work. All of a sudden, out of the dark appears what turned out to be big truck wheel and axle right in the middle of my lane. Just missed it by a hair. It was the closest I ever came to hitting something like that at high speed. I slowed down after that one.

My daughters step dad was killed by folks coming to town to buy crack. Dropped beer, reach to right to catch and swerve across the yellow line...as told by the only survivor. On an infinitely lighter note... Was driving the car down a 4 lane hiway one afternoon. Drove past a 3' four x four in the right lane. This is in a section between 2 ramps about a mile apart. Figured it would take 10 min. to circle back and toss it in my trunk. I had the time. (Tailgaters piss me off) I circled back and parked off the road with the 4x4 about 10' down the road. I sat as traffic was approaching, a car with a tail gating van. Of course Mr. dumb ass tailgater does not see the wood. He hits it and makes several loud clunks as it hits the undercarriage. The 4x4 flies off the road and I had a front row seat. Hilarious. (Tailgaters piss me off) Most important thing I do is find my own place on the hiway to drive. Speed up or slow down to get out of clusters of vehicles. Normally slow down.
Blue Diesel
A client of mine lost (as in dead) her husband to an accident like this. You guys who like math can figure out the odds. He was driving eastbound at about 50-60 mph. He met a flatbed semi travelling westbound at about the same speed. In the nanosecond that they were beside each other, a piece of 24-36" pipe rolled off the flatbed onto his car and crushed him.

And in this case, you may be as careful as you can, there is nothing you can do!
Micmac
Hey Brian, that reminds me of a Flogging Molly song, "It's the worst day since yesterday" Math makes my head hurt, in my undergrad studies, every Sunday afternoon the High Point College basketball team and I went to math tutoring. Later during graduate studies when I took advanced psychological statistics I was lucky the professor was an alcoholic and I kept her drunk (she had a nice turd cutter BTW) and she passed me, somehow I made the Honor (Honour for you) Society for Psychology students. Specteur I am thinking I will be in Montreal in two weeks if things go as planned, maybe we could have lunch one day on me. Will you be here on weekday or week-end? Let me know when you'll come and if I'm not on business travel, it will a pleasure for me to cross the bridge for a lunch! indiantoo
Brings to mind at Sturgis about 7-10 years ago the only person killed was a biker, when a port a potty fell of a truck and killed him... Talk about when it is your time to go

TNSilverScout
I never ride behind, or next to, trucks at anytime.....even in the car. Good rule to live by. This same thing happened a few years ago to a couple in their Corvette. Object flew out of the back of a truck. They swerved to avoid it and went into the median, lost control and destroyed the car, killing both of them. Some people don't realize items placed in the back of a truck can get sucked out of the bed by the wind.
dk007
Several years ago, I had just dropped off my boat at the marina and my wife and I were heading home in the truck down the freeway. We came upon a Jeep Cherokee in the right lane with a mattress and box spring set tied to the top which was flapping wildly in the wind. As I caught up to him, I told my wife I couldn't believe this guy would even consider driving with a poorly secured load hauling ass down the freeway. As I got closer, I accelerated to quickly get by and it's a good thing I did. Just as I was at his left rear quarter panel, the box spring came loose and went airborne right over the top of my truck bed, hit the freeway and shattered in a million pieces. The cars behind me started going everywhere. Had I not accelerated, that thing would've probably come right through the windshield.

Where is the police when we need them to catch that kind of dumb ass?
