Dr. Mark
Normally, doing the professional, ethically correct thing is just automatic with me. It's how things are done (or, at least, are SUPPOSED to be done) in medicine. I am an old-school doc...the oath meant something to me when I took it all those years ago. Today, doing the professional, ethically correct thing chafed my ass. Little thuglet comes in from the jail. He is, the nurses advise me, in the local paper for having beaten and robbed an elderly man of $20 (twenty freaking dollars!) and stealing his vehicle, taking it on a joyride, and totalling it out. Thuglet has gonorrhea and scabies (lice). I was so tempted to just give him a shot of saline solution with the biggest-ass needle i could find...like, a 14 gauge...and send his itchy, infected, infested ass back to jail. Sigh. I didn't. No matter how badly I wanted to. I treated him absolutely correctly. Take that, Hippocrates.
Last Resort
Couldn't you have accidentally dropped him in a wood chipper?

toycar10
I second the vote for wood chipper. As long as we don't lie about it its still ethical right
mycorn
apparently now days it's perfectly ethical to lie about it as well as long as it's for the greater good
Hunters Friend
Since this is a no names reply I can always post this and claim delusional fantasies if confronted. I seem to know a person who was similarly stuck in your position. He told me before he went to insert the needle he "accidentally" scraped the point of it against the stainless steel tray (thereby dulling the tip just ever so slightly) Guess the perp didn't appreciate the "OW! Goddamn that hurt" feeling that came afterwards. It's human nature to want to exact some revenge. 9 years ago we had a great guy show up at our resort. (This is back in the day when we did long term rentals) Really nice guy to be sure. Then the cops showed up and arrested him. Turns out Mr. Nice Guy had a history of beating the shit out of his wife and put her in the hospital for a pretty good spell. Ya never know man - keep smiling and move on. toycar10
I think that only applies if you are running for government office
Brock
Doc you could have made the correct treatment hurt a little... When I sent troops to clinic on Monday for burning piss...they would come back with horror stories about physician running a 8 inch qtip down their piss hole...twisting it and working it up and down like cleaning a bore of a rifle after shooting it....TO GET A GOOD CULTURE FOR THE LAB. (LOL) Then they would disinfect it where he just rubbed it a little raw before giving the shot. Did not have many repeats to see the Doc after a weekend in Amsterdam by the troops. 2blackbelts
I have actually treated hundreds of prisoners from the county jail, who were brought in with neck pain, low back pain, etc., and were in irons with armed deputys. If the problem was out of my expertise, I referred them to the local hospital or ER, but most were just musculo - skeletal problems that were easily handled by manipulation and physical therapy. No matter how much I wanted to give that little bit of extra, and I had some realy scumbags brought in, like Dr. Mark, I treated each one as gently and respectfully as any other patient. Unfortunately, it is very easy for someone, especially the incarcerated, to file a lawsuite against a physician for negligance, improper procedures, etc. It is just too much of a gamble to let your personal feelings come into play.

CHIEF DOC 99
It is not a crime to be mentally ill, however when the mentally ill do manage criminal behavior is it better or lawful to crush them in accordance with the severity of the offense to society or incure the expenses to cure them of their miserable and desperate criminal disposition through behavior modification and education for the willing participants? Redemption through retrieved reformation is a most desirable outcome even if only one out of a hundred can so become a mentor to bring others out of the darkside. ymmv
