The problem with this info from emails, phones, taxes, etc. is that they can find SOMETHING they don't like on anyone, build a case, and you are done. Very slippery slope. Yep, a slippery slope and I do not fully condone the gov. actions. But..... if you believe there are no groups living in the U.S. who are planning to do us harm well then.............I got a bridge for sale too. Airpirate
Hey, here's a novel idea. Target the groups that mean to do us harm, this crap is all in the name of political correctness, not to mention that dear leader has a hard on for anyone that doesn't want to follow his new world order. The attacks on US soil during the past 20 years, 9-11, Fort Hood, Underwear Bomber, Shoe Bomber, Boston have what common link to the perpetrators? Anyone? Ever been through security at Israel's Ben Gurrien Airport? Zurich? Munich? I have, they have a unique thing called "Profiling" it works

Vintage229
Vintage, another question. You have kids? They ever said something on the phone or been to a website they shouldn't have? What if they say something stupid as all kids do that raises the attention of the authorities? Nobody is listening to millions of calls a day. Just how big do you think the government is? They are not recording audio. They are collecting call records and other meta data. Your kids can say stupid stuff all day long and nobody would know or care. If by chance they do get the attention of the authorities it still requires approval from the courts to initiate any kind of surveillance. What I do not know is what the retention period is for all that data. I would take issue with the collection if they are a permanent record but I wouldn't loose any sleep over it either. I just have not heard/read anything about how long that information will be kept. What I also see possibly happening is the information being used for domestic criminal investigations since the records have already been collected. Once again, a court order will still be required. I am by no means an expert on this topic but I do know if there is an inadvertent collection on a US citizen it has to cease immediately when it is detected. (When I say collection I mean actually reading/listening to the information being captured.) This has been spun out of control by the media. The government does not spy on it's own people unless there's probable cause. Here's the short skinny of the FISA act. You can get the full version on Wikipedia. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 ("FISA" Pub.L. 95–511, 92 Stat. 1783, 50 U.S.C. ch. 36) is a United States law which prescribes procedures for the physical and electronic surveillance and collection of "foreign intelligence information" between "foreign powers" and "agents of foreign powers" (which may include American citizens and permanent residents suspected of espionage or terrorism).[1] The law does not apply outside the United States. The law has been repeatedly amended since the September 11 attacks.
Vintage229
Oh, and one more thing. Private companies (not the government) collects more information about you every day. There are services out there who pull down public records on us and they are building a database of our activities. Then they sell subscriptions to that information for an annual fee. (Around $300 I think.) I could look you up and determine how many divorces you've had, speeding tickets, law suits against you, EVERYTHING you have ever done at the DMV, the cars you have registered, the taxes you have paid, etc.... etc.... etc..... Anything that is public record. Wayyyy more information than what you are hearing about in the news today. As an example, go here and run a search on yourself. It won't give you the full report but it will show you enough to prove my point. http://instantchecks.net/?page=s&sid=b&s1=611a I paid the 1 month fee for unlimited searches for about $28 to get my report just out of curiosity. Apparently it's not the best or most accurate site but it does provide some basic information. I have seen professional services that have a much higher quality control of their data and much more extensive. The site provided me with: * Name and aliases. * Date of Birth (which was wrong) * Age * Astrological sign. (seriously??) * My current and previous address with a google map link. (And any other persons that have lived at that address) * Related persons. (It showed a few family members and one person who I have no idea who they are.) I could then click on their names and look at their info. They had my ex-wife listed but not my current spouse. * Criminal History (Too long to list here.) * Sex offenders living near me. (There's already an app for that.) * My astrological compatibility with others. (seriously???) * Marriage and Divorce records (Nothing listed even though I'm on wife #2 for 20+ years) * Any kind of license (FAA, DEA (pharmaceuticals)) It gave a list of a bunch of other persons with the same name and mine was not listed but I don't have any special licenses. And then for another $10 I can get the "premium" report and I declined that expanded subscription. Especially seeing as how they are not the most accurate service. Hork
Was talking to a couple of lawyers the other day in a bar in Downtown Omaha. This stuff all came up. Of course, the lawyers try and blame Bush and the Patriot Act however, one had a scary story to tell. Seems his sister in law was talking to one of her friends on the cell phone after a very heavy lunch in which she ate something that did not agree with her. She made the comment that she "could not wait to get home and get rid of this bomb" or something to that effect. Guess what waited her at home? Two suits from the FBI. Scary stuff IMHO. Well seeing as how we weren't there we can't speak to the specifics of that situation but.......it seems a little far fetch to me. If they heard it then they should have heard it in the context in which it was said. If I had two suits on my door step I would have a lot of questions as to how/why they heard my conversation. I'm sure you can squeeze the phrase "I'm gonna pick up the bomber" in your conversation seeing as how you are having all those issues with your scoot.
