darkrider
having the heads always cater to the rh side on cruisers seems to be the factory norm since forever. is it because the kickstand is on the left and a more exposed muffler to the heat rising on the rh side after shut down and dismount?

darkrider
why are kickstands always on the left?
XV62
Probably a holdover from mounting horses from the left side. Easier to have the kickstand on the dismount side. Also you need more to do, another hobby or two or sumthin', cuz you really come up with some off the wall schitt ever now and then. darkrider
horses... good point! or I wonder if bicycles had kickstands on the left back then and that was why?
XV62
horses... good point! or I wonder if bicycles had kickstands on the left back then and that was why? Every bicycle I ever saw that had a kick stand was on the left. My old balloon tire from 60 years ago was on the left.

darkrider
at least some you have a sense of humor next time I'm gonna ask why handlebars instead of a steering wheel to just piss off v62 I guess its just been pretty much coincidince then to keep the exhaust on the right. which wouldn't surprise me since there hasn't really been any big thinking outside the box in the american cruiser market in decades that I've noticed. its cold and wet outside
Doc
why are kickstands always on the left? Because way back when you'd carry your sword on your left side(so you could grab it with your right hand faster.Saw that question coming). {Because most people are right handed( saw that question coming too) thats why.} Thus you could not really mount your horse from the right side. Since it became habit to mount from the left, this was made the "low" side on motorcycles.Exhaust on opposite side so you didn't have to dig under a hot pipe to find the kickstand. This is what I looked up when I couldn't sleep last night because someone had to ask" why is the kick stand on the left". Now ,no more questions. I got to get some sleep.
darkrider
that sounds like a good explanation to me, doc! thank you sir!
indiantoo
Part of it might be because installing pipes above all the stuff on the left side would put exhaust almost crotch high and you could cook your hamstring area really easy? Dr. Mark
Several reasons. First, the horse thing. Yes, horses were mounted on the left, so motorcycles began to be mounted on the left. With the bike leaning leftward, it's easier to swing a leg over. Second, the kickstarter was on the right, and the kickstand would interfere with the kick mechanism. Additionally, some bikes have to be leaned on the kickstand while starting them. Same thing with the old 'step-starters'. Third, the exhaust, as you noticed already, is traditionally swooped to the right, which would make it difficult to get to the kickstand next to a hot exhaust pipe. (And before you bring it up, dual exhausts came later...MUCH later.) Most stuff on motorcycles is oriented a certain way. Try pushing your bike from the right side. Awkward. hasbin
DR, It's the mounting of the horse thing, just a few weeks ago some poor basterd got arrested for mounting a horse from the backside or was that mounting the horse's "back-side"
