darkrider
this winter I'm gong to run the wires inside the handlebars like alot of you have done. I know its a fairly easy job but I'd rather be riding. I've noticed that harley, victory, indian, honda, etc, etc... none seem to make the extra effort to clean up the look of the bars by routing them inside, and instead just tie wrap them. they go through all the extra effort for a cleaner look in other places, why not this one? Clean up the look of the bars by replacing 'em...get a prewired setup or bend your own for that one off look.

darkrider
Clean up the look of the bars by replacing 'em...get a prewired setup or bend your own for that one off look. but I really like the handling of the stock bars, and I know they dont look the coolest, and are metric looking. is there anything special about pre-wired bars other than the holes already drilled? darkrider
<smirk> . . . just one more reason to make me feel good about my '03. where the 03's ran inside the bars from the factory?
injun46
where the 03's ran inside the bars from the factory? 02, 03 & 04's. Don't know about the 1999-2001's.
hasbin
01' Prototype Scout has them in the bars
TallRider
. . . yes, the '03 has them running inside the handlebars . . . now that doesn't mean they didn't fuck them up, but they look cool. I think one of the Anderson brothers (owners of the former Seattle Indian in Burien) had another set of beach bars that were a wee bit longer and had a slightly different curvature and they looked WAY cool. I have no idea how they handled.
uplander
When Greg Brew was down at Branson last year he said that wires in the bars never passed there shake test. So therefore they are not ............
injun46
When Greg Brew was down at Branson last year he said that wires in the bars never passed there shake test. So therefore they are not ............ Yep, but that sounds kinda fishy. It's more labor intensive to put them in the bars, so they probably save an hour, probably less, in building a bike. Ya know, cut corners and save a buck. I don't knoow about the rest of you, but I haven't heard of any problems with the bar wiring in the Gilroys. Just sayin.....
CHIEF DOC 99
The only real issue is due to burrs on the inlet & outlet dimple/holes sawing through wire jackets. make sure you get all the sharpies off the rims of your drilled wire feed holes, tye a strong string to the end of the bundle, feed the string through the hole & use a blow dryer or compressed air to move the leadstring through the bars to the outlet port and pull the bundle through. You can use beeswax or soap to lube the bundle up through the bends if you want it to slide through ez.
Brock
also...more electronics require more wire and if inside diameter of bars is smaller or has rough spots that will eat through the coating...you dont want to run them internally. Until they come out with their own bikes from ground up they are using what was given them during sale of KM to Spirit Lake..... you can buy aftermarkest already wired, buy aftermarket and run your wires through them.....or as Doc said get some custom ones made up to match the OEM styling exactly. darkrider
02, 03 & 04's. Don't know about the 1999-2001's. learn something new everyday I will probably use heat shrink and soap. with no more of a bend, I think using docs soap suggestion will help too. indiantoo
2000 were ran through the bars. you can tie a peice of rag that fits into the bars on string, then use a vaccum cleaner to suck that trough the bars then use the soap to lube it through
Rustrtal
'01's in the bars too
Brock
All the Gilroy PP100 bikes had internal wires in bars....KM was the first move away from it and was told there just was not enough room inside the bars to make it work with all the electronics they tried to include in the bike....and there were other MORE IMPORTANT changes or upgrades that needed to be made before worrying about internal vs external wires. They might fit but if they constantly wear through and ground out your connections then not much good....

I don't see how more electronics in the bike is a reason... you got dimmer switch and horn and turn signal out there on the Gilroys... what else does the KM have... Brock
I don't see how more electronics in the bike is a reason... you got dimmer switch and horn and turn signal out there on the Gilroys... what else does the KM have... all the wires that go from controls down to speedo for cycling through the different display options are one thing...also the turn signal wires are both running through that same LEFT control as previous option...rather than one through each as on Gilroys........so that would be 3-4 wires there for the toggle trigger and turn signal wires..........and apparently they have better shielding on the wires to protect them....I know my 02 had shit for wire and everything was wearing through in handlebars. I also think the bars are different than our Gilroys but who knows.... I just know they did not think the wires would fit and offer any longevity due to abrasion and being compressed so tightly......
