Will Polaris & Current Indian Dealers Have Problems?

Recommended Posts

It seems like 1 is brewing as we speak. I know there are some who do not care for Art Welsh, the owner of Indian of the Twin Cities, Twin Cities Indian, whatever. I have no issues with the guy & like him...however, I have also only been to his shop like 3 times & have only bought clothing from him so far, so who knows.

Anywway, I am seeing a clash may happen, at least here. Polaris is a big company & it seems trying to do big company things. However, the strictly Indian dealers opened with small company KM. The put up all their money on a hope & dream & have alot at risk. Now things could be a bit more stable because Polaris owns Indian, but it still doesn't really help the dealers if they are going to come down on alot of things. Like it says, the have only the Chiefs in 3 different forms & with only the Chief, I doubt with the prices, the dealers can survive just on bike sales.

If it is just making the poster they are upset with, that causes more issues, because it is something the dealer had made so he can sell it & make cash.

We'll see where this goes, but I hope there aren't issues already with dealers & Polaris. That won't lead to anything good for Indian & it's longevity in my opinion.

here is my take from a business point of view, not an Indian fan point of view.

Being a dealer gives certain responsibilities to the parent organization. The dealers are have right to sell licensed products and accessories and a larger amount of freedom I am assuming versus an independent shop trying to do the same. Also there is a level of implied INSIDER knowledge that comes with every dealer as they are kept abreast of state of affairs, new projects, changes to current projects, forecasts, ROI, etc. Insinuating that a new model that has been hotly contested and desired for years is near fruition...is a failure in trust with Indian by the dealer. Dealers do not have authority to make model release dates or imply such is coming without corporate approval first.

I personally don't think it is coming this year....no insider info...nothing but I think they more than enough to chew on right now.

no, Indian will be fine..in spite of the calls of doom or gloom or posturing to make a buck before the next guy.

I seem to remember Ramp Indian in NY doing similar things (marketing their own way) and it didn't bode well. I say be happy with the hand dealt but that is just IMHO.

Ride safe.

as far as the poster goes...I have to say until he made this recent post, I had no idea it had anything to do with a Scout Model. Like is said, it says back with a vengence then has a bunch of images of old Indian bikes, then the big picture of the Indian head & then the bottom has the Indian logo, LONE SCOUT & then the Indian Twin Cities stuff.

As for why he would post this kind of thing...no idea. I do know he likes to wage internet wars with people though. He has done it on the Cyril Huze blog.

We'll see, but I think I need to start calling some of the Polaris dealers in Wisconsin & see if any will carry Indians. I have Twin Cities or Chicago, both over 4 hours away.

i wouldn hold my breath

the ones here say they are not interested

not sayin i got accurate info from some salesdipshit

or that it wont change

but it sure aint no 'mainstream' market today

there's obviously exceptions but

most folks are in survival mode

not speculative venture mode now

You are correct there...however, that is extra cash being invested & since it's a Darkhorse, I'll have to add bags, windshield, highway bar...etc

so saving what money I can will be good.

I found out the hard way wioth my FXST. If I would have started with a Night Train, I could have saved alot of money.

I asked Art a couple weeks ago if Polaris had issues with the Twin Cities dealer doing their own marketing, clothes, posters, etc. The answer was nope, not yet. Life in Indian land changes fast so who knows were the future will take us. The Scout model will be back. Everyone agrees it's just a matter of time. I believe Polaris is enjoying the free press. Both good and bad. It is certainly driving eyes to Polaris and making people realize Indian is alive again. No matter what generation it is.

FYI - the Twin Cities dealer gets lots of its money from Native American Casino funds as they are heavy investors. Lots of things done at this dealership are giving back and fund raising events for people in need, children, and Indians (feather not dot). As far as I know, this Indian dealer is the only store with real Indians keeping things moving along. Realize some of the designs for clothing, posters, etc. are tributes to Native Americans as well as Indian Motorcycles. It is also inexpensive unique artwork that people buy up left and right.. The new Scout poster is yet another example of this.

Hey Joel,

Did Joe get back to you with any #'s from the dyno? I have not seen much of him today so I hope he did.. You might also want to ask him about the Specs on our 111 (110.8) Power Plus 105 Big Bore Kit and Cams with 50MM Throttle Body .. I can't wait to release those #'s. Ask Art if he has any old FXR frames or Late Shovel Early Evo Bagger Frames laying around we are sending a test mule out to AZ later this winter. We don't have anything like that...

imho. At this point "longevity" seems a joke. The Grand Old Marque may well be around long after we are all dust. There appears to be plenty of companies that would love to use the Brand to make a buck.

me ride um Centennial

cheers

Try # 2. friggin timer ran out on the edit a post.

SNO - Joe at your shop emailed me performance numbers and dollars to do the project. My bike is put away for winter so next spring is soonest I could do anything. Project is very realistic, not all that ghostly scary or super high tech. Actually reasonable bang for the buck. Sno, I suggest you guys put a proposal package together showing all the details, costs, etc. and post it here. Leave the technical details out however.

Side note: The new Victory Cross Country/Cross Roads is super high tech compared to our Indians. I downloaded a 2011 service manual for this bike just to look around at how Victory does their engine controls. WOW. There is a reason the USA Millitary buys stuf from Polaris. Indian is in good hands now with regards to technology and engineering capability.

Can anyone verify that Indian Chicago has or is shutting its doors? Not sure of the credibility of the story. :Feet-Up[1]:

Actually I have thought for a while now Polaris should take a cue from him about shirt designs. I see Harley & Triumph really knowing how to market their brand name. Everyone else is sorely lagging behind. I have yet to see people running around with Victory shirts on.

There is a reason why Harley makes every product known to man with their Logo on it & that is because people BUY it.

Yeah & the Ride For School supplies he does is a big deal & does good for kids who don't have much.

Polaris has issues with one for sure....and it ain't about that crappy looking, Scout poster he is pimping on facebook...his problems with Indian MFG. started LONG before this issue of poor me started..

so before this turns into the latest Twin Cities sales pitch....

let me get this straight

1.

Art is all of a sudden a Native American....?

2.

out of nowhere he is being picked on by big bad Polaris...?

3.

Joel, changed his password so Art can't post on here now...?

SOS..different day...

fartposingasshole.jpg

Art is his own worst enemy...search Cyril's blog or Ridley motorcycles just for starters

he has had creative differences with Indian "Posters" going way back...including some in this very "community"...

he had issues with at least two other motorcycle manufacturers that I am aware of....

at least be fair and let the whole story be told ......

Speaking of advertisements. can someone post the link for the Rupert's kids Indian calandars, and the "other" Indian posters. I need to add the newer stuff to my garage wall collection.

Yes it's true that people use more than one name on Cyril. I'm guilty and so are you.

Yes it's true family gets a lot of businesses off the ground. Could be a mom or dad or both. Old money flows from generation to generation. Take another booze cruise around Tonka if ya need a reminder. Lot of currently wealthy people got funded by mommy or daddy.

Yes it's true from time to time I do volunteer work for Twin Cities Indian. Steve, you gonna tell me you have never done volunteer work for your favorite dealer? OMG guilty again.

:fucktard:

Indian is STILL in it's infancy. It needs volunteers to keep the little growth that is has going. That's why I do it. IF their was another Indian dealer close to me I would do free work for them also.

I can't talk about the Arrowhead group. I promised LR Mike no fighting here over that subject. Let that one go Hnot.
