Reports: Bin Laden dead - Ben Smith: Reports: Bin Laden dead

May 01, 2011

Categories:White House.Reports: Bin Laden dead

Nearly a decade after the September 11 attacks reshaped America's politics and national security strategy, President Barack Obama was set to announce Sunday night that Osama bin Laden is dead, the New York Times and CBS reported in advance of the presidential statement.

The announcement marks, symbolically at least, the abrupt end to a period in American foreign policy that seemed best symbolized by stalemate in Libya, by the striking image of an Afghan prison guard gazing down a hole through which Taliban fighters had escaped, and by the unfortunate phrase, "leading from behind."

Bin Laden's continuing operational role is a matter of debate, and it's not clear that his death will have a large impact beyond its dramatic propaganda consequences. But for America's national security apparatus, Osama has been the white whale." And for Obama, his death appears to fulfill half of a promise made at an October, 2008 debate with Senator John McCain:

"We will kill bin Laden. We will crush al Qaeda."

Official: Osama bin Laden is dead

US has his body, source says

WASHINGTON — Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden is dead and the U.S. has his body, says a person familiar with developments.

President Barack Obama was to make the announcement shortly that after searching in vain for bin Laden since he disappeared in Afghanistan in late 2001, the Saudi-born extremist is dead, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Details of the death were sparse. He was killed in a military operation in Afghanistan, according to sources, though it was unclear which countries were involved. CNN reported that the al-Qaida leader was killed in a mansion outside Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.

It is a major accomplishment for Obama and his national security team, having fulfilled the goal once voiced by Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, to bring to justice the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Isn't it coincidental that Pakistan has recently been trying to get accepted into NATO? Do you think Pakistan my have given us his location as a plea bargain to get accepted into NATO?
