Scout Finally Let Me Down

Recommended Posts

greetings tribe....

OK...I'll try and keep this short....

I had the scoot out for a romp around town about mid August...worked...as usual...pretty damn good!

I then parked it in the garage with treated fuel and went to work for 6 weeks.....no I cant ride it to work!

I came home as mentioned about a week ago and went for a leg over.....no start...HMMM??

OK....I dumped the gas anyways and poured in some good fresh hi-test!......no start....

Checks.....

Module flashing while cranking .....OK

Fuel to carburator.....yes...a good strong squirt while hitting the throttle....OK

Spark plugs checked....a little weak so I swapped over to new.....no start

new plugs checked and mid-strong spark....swapped over to Used but good coil.....no change

So....I have fuel, spark, air and a strong battery with good connections and all cleaned and tightend with no faults at ECM.

This S&S dont even attempt to fire up....it knocks a little when I give it more fuel or enrichment but not even an attempt.....I will check timing to be sure but ponder and fire away your thoughts peeps!

Thanks as usual...all the best....Mick!

Mick: Wiggle the ignition switch..tytn batt connects...suspect internal nosecone pickup/cranksensor unit may have issues. Solenoid myt be gummed up with carbon - ever clean it out yet? Could also be the start micro- switch at the right grip...check for currentpower with a voltmeter and note where it is found and where it leaves off. Do volt drop test and ohm test the earth connects...but I'm sure you know this stuff. Mystery for you to solve, it is...FKN EH!

LOL....yeah Doc...fkn ey is right....checked most stuff...engine rolls over fine with the new tornado installed....drained bowl twice also...spark is there and the fuel is there...Think I'll squirt some lube-oil down inside to aid compression...if this works..Im strippin it!...LOL.... gotto open up that trigger plate and cross reference timing too...also checked cleaned TP plug...Strange thing being it worked fine last ride before I parked it....just gotta a haircut so the headscratchin's startin to hurt....thx bro...:Beer-Chug[1]: ..

Prolly first Indian to break down while parked in the garage.....NOT!...:banghead:.....LOL

...

More ponderin required..;) ....next rum should help!

Sounds like my Chief when I take it out of winter storage.

May anual spring routine:

Take Chief out of garage, turn petcock on,two twists of the thottle, No start.

Use enrichener. Knocks a bit, I smell gas. Pull plugs, they're wet. Turn engine over to push fuel out of cylinders.

Put in new (dry) plugs, put Chief on a battery charger, it starts up.

This happens every year without fail. Kinda funny.

After all you've done I think checking the static timing's a good idea. It sounds like you've got everything it takes to make it run so maybe you don't have it at the right time. How that would happen sitting in the garage I can't say. You didn't mention compression. Do you have a compression tester?

At least you didn't have to push it home....

Mick,

If you have a timing light, remove the primary side plug to get a peek at the flywheel marks... this will show when it is firing with the strobe on it...have rags handy can get messy...should be slightly retarded for statr cycle.

Check for vaccuum leaks at intake and that carbtop plug on the VOES tube...maybe petcock is clogged? You dumped the floatbowl twice so you must be gettin' fuel...have you been using the enrichener to start?

Odd for an S&S to go out of time...usually they are set it and forget it - good hittin' and strong runnin'.

Nosecone magnetic pickups do go bad with age & heat from time to time - no way to fortell a failure.

Fellas,

I know your thinkin' what I am..." theres no fkin way something serious {or at least semi} went on with this scoot while stabled for the last 6-7 weeks....gotta be something stupid n' silly"

As mentioned...this 88 runs fine...never a problem....1/2 enricher and 1 touch of starter switch...zalls needed. Dry/beige colored plugs when renewed....great!

So I poured a nice shot a rum...lit up a christo (sorry bout that Lol) and glared it down for a minute....thinkin....shit man...you get 50-60K HP diesels running when they act up so a 60HP Vtwin aint gonna beat ya!.....but they can be crack whores...(ask Pete)

I had to check that float bowl plug again being there is a nice crisp blue spark across the electrodes of the plugs.....sooooo...I did....yeah theres fuel there....sooooo I pulled the inlet line off {with the pcock closed of course} and it

it seemed kinda Dry....I know....WTF???

I then directed this into a catch pan...and cracked open the Pcock.....a big air Fart and copius fuel to follow.....reconnected....and 1st touch of starter switch...Vroom!...checked vents....fine ( Caps were off a few times also..??? )

Funny this one didnt even try an attempt or at least run for a minute or two on a full bowl....so perhaps shit gas was still in there ...tho it smelled fine.

Also funny because of the good run of the inlet line with no high spots....that inline filter is going when i gets me more fuel line hose....musta been a bubble formed in there from the lay-up

Sooooooo as usual thanks for the feedback and Ur untainted knowledge...

Gonna go with the Super E rebuild and velocity stack and rejetting, Woods W6H Cam and roller rockers, 2 to 1 Exhaust, larger 33 tooth drive....Dyna 2000i single fire and if I can sneak it by....Chrome primaries and rocker covers

yeah...gonna keep this one....threatening a while back to move it

That aughta keep me tinkerin' over the winter....come on Snow!...

Thanks fellas....gonna go for a :moped: ' round the loop now.....Peggy's Cove for those who are familiar....

All the best....Mick........:Beer-Chug[1]:

...yeah I was lucky being home with all the gear at my disposal.....

Not sure if this bikes stabled in a heated garage er not but....if cold...prolly Try this....the night before a ride...slip a 500W halogen under the bike (1/2covered).....and in the morning...giver!

Hey Mick, I'v been told by a "supposed" Rep of a fuel Co. that the gas we get these days don't last as long anymore, I now put Stabil in the mower gas & others that won't be run frequently, Just a thought......... :Feet-Up[1]:

Louie, Louie, Louie......some things ya just don't put on the 'net :babyhaha::babyhaha::babyhaha::babyhaha:

Just kidding man, I'm like you every Friday night I go out and eat on the bike to keep the lubricants mixed, battery charged, and I like to ride unless it's freezing rain and snowing or rain. Save money on "tenders" that way. It's kinda neat to pass the idiots with all the HD stickers/American flag decals on their Toyota's when it's 30-40 degrees. They won't look ya in the eye. Or if they say, "nice bike" I tell em, "nice HD stickers".

Hey Chris...yeah thanks...Funny I was sayin the same thing a while back about the gas to a couple a bros...I do add stabilizer to all my different "Jugs" but that even has a shelf life....or at least whats it's suppose to stabize dont!

Either way..time to throw out the 5 gallon jugs and go down to 1's.....6-7 weeks on stabalized gas.....and you get this result....unreal!

stay safe....Mick

I've heard this as well, not sure if I buy it or not. I've never put any additives in anything I own and can't say I've ever had any trouble in the spring firing things up.

Not doubting what your "supposed" rep says, just saying it doesn't seem to have ever been an issue. Got a roto tiller that has sat out in the shed for at least 2 maybe 3 years at a time, can pull the chord no more than 3 times and she'll fire right up. Same old gas and everything.

Then again, maybe I'm just lucky!!! After all, I am still running on the stock battery in my Spirit...
