Absolutely horrible crash in Phoenix. Three riders killed, and several others in critical condition.

A garbage truck ran down nine riders at a stoplight.

They were waiting for the light to change.

Seems the driver was "shuffling papers and not paying attention".

Right. 20 bucks says the bastard was texting.

In the pictures one bike looks like it might be a Chief, it is a chief fender at least. Do we have any members in that area?

Go to photo 18

Oh jeez. That IS a Chief fender. And, yeah, we got a lot of members in the area. Oh, God, y'all.

Looks like it might have been the fire fighter captain's bike who was in the crash; he is pictured on an Indian styled fender bike in the current video. What a shame, I hope we all remember to check our mirrors, even at a stop light.

Horrific scene. My heart goes out to the families of everyone injured and killed. May they rest in peace.

I agree, probably a cell phone call / text involved. Truck driver claimed he was distracted with paperwork...

My UPS driver training taught me to always have an exit in any situation. Never pull too closely to the vehicle in front of you. Watch your mirrors. Be prepared to get out of the way. I try to apply that when riding as well. Guess I'll be putting the big functional mirrors back on the blue chief and taking off the smaller ones that look cool.

Prayers sent for all involved.

BTW, did I read the story right? It looks like the "riders got to close to the big rig"?

Yeah, I hate when I get too close to people who come flying up behind me at stoplights... <_<

Idiot reporter.

Yeah but it doesn't just say it once: 1) "...when several motorcycles collided with a truck hauling garbage on the Carefree Highway..." and 2) "Salomon told The Associated Press the accident happened when the riders got too close to the big rig" but then goes on to quote him saying the opposite "It appears the garbage truck collided with the group of motorcyclists. There was fire involved. It's a horrific scene," Salomon said."

F'n CBS. They can't report accurately on anything.

Prayers for a full recovery for the injured and may the God hold the dead in the palm of his hand.

That bastard driving the truck wasn't driving, he was fucking around. I had the same thing happen to me about 20 years, fortunately I was in my car. I was stopped in traffic on the expressway (Chicago). This prick in a moving truck was on a cell phone and looking at the sign for upcomming bands at a local venue located off the side of the rode, nailed me at 60 miles an hour. I had no where to go as I had another car in stopped in front of me.

Broken sternum, ribs, shoulder wrist, lacerated kidneys, brusied heart and brain stem. The car was an unrecognizable ball.

Ever since I ALWAYS have an out in front of me and ALWAYS watch my rear when things are stopping

I think Stu is correct about that fender being on a Drifter.

Doesn't change anything. Just a horrible scene.

Typical news reporting attitude "Group of biker got too near a truck..."

Riders worst nightmare.

Well, That news just topped-off a really fukd up day. I hope that those that survived heal quick & the family's of the unfortunate ones find peace.

Getting hit from behind is the "only" way I haven't been hit on a scoot, I now always split a car @ lights & keep my eyes moving, I try "not" to be 1st at a light as you can get tagged from the rear & also by a car that has been hit and re-directed into you.

Phoenix truck driver in fatal crash arrested

April 6, 2010 - 8:11pm

PHOENIX (AP) - The driver of a dump truck that slammed into a group of motorcycles stopped at a red light in north Phoenix has been arrested and booked into jail on four counts of manslaughter.

Phoenix police say 46-year-old Michael Jakscht was taken into custody Tuesday. He also faces five counts of aggravated assault and seven counts of endangerment.

Police say initial toxicology tests show Jakscht had methamphetamine in his system March 25 when his truck rear-ended eight motorcycles, killing three men and one woman. Five other riders were injured, at least one severely.
