TallRider
Speaking of hockey, those of you in the frozen hinterlands of Minnesnowta, do you remember when the MSHSL had ONE hockey tournament and the northern schools would play the city schools . . . the smalls against the bigs . . . how ALL the games were carried live on TV . . . and the runs that schools had . . . School - State Champions Eveleth '45, '48, '49, '50, '51 Roseau '46, '58, '59, '61, '90 St. Paul Johnson '47, '53, '55, '63 Hibbing '52, '73 Thief River Falls '54, '56 International Falls '57, '62, '64, '65, '66, '72 Greenway '67, '68 Edina '69, '71, '82, '84, '88 Edina East '74, '78, '79 Hill Murray '83, '91 Duluth East '60 Grand Rapids '75, '76, '80 Rochester John Marshall '77 Bloomington Jefferson '81, '89 Bloomington Kennedy '87 Burnsville '85 Those were the days . . . And you know you're from Minnesnowta if you can pronounce "Kandiyohi", "Wayzata", "Cloquet", "Mille Lacs", "Faribault", "Isanti", "Roseau" and I'm sure you can add some more. Keep your stick on the ice. Edited February 20, 2010 by TallRider

TallRider
Al - when I was growing up out near Lake Minnetonka, hockey was more of a cult than a sport; you started young and never stopped. You just had to dodge the iceboats sailing by at 60 mph. In those days the only indoor ice time a team got was for their games; all the practice was outside. And kids started playing pond hockey as soon as they could lace up skates. Rumor has it that between 1948 and 1953 all Minnesnowta hospitals were required to provide each newborn with a pair of skates, a stick, and a toque with a puck embroidered on it. I remember in 1972 I was in grade 3 and during the summit series between canada and russia they would dismiss all our classes and take us to the gym to watch the games on the few TV's that the school had. We spent most of our youth playing street hockey not hanging out at the malls. Al
