Earthquake rocks US state of Nevada

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck a sparsely-populated region of northern Nevada on Thursday, damaging buildings and rupturing water and gas mains, officials said.

The National Earthquake Information Center said the unusually powerful earthquake struck at 6:16 am (1416 GMT) at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles) about 17 km (11 miles) east southeast of Wells, Nevada.

A telephone operator in the Wells Sheriff's office said there had been damage to buildings and gas pipes but no immediate indication of injuries.

"There has been structural damage to buildings which is still being assessed and we've had reports of collapsed chimneys, broken gas and water pipes," she told AFP from the town, which has a population of around 1,300.

"The biggest problem is that incidents like this don't happen in this region very often so we've had a lot of people calling asking what they should do."

A geophysicist at the NEIC in Denver, Colorado, said the quake had been felt for hundreds of miles in every direction but widespread damage was not expected because of the remote, rugged nature of the terrain. The NEIC first reported a 6.3 magnitude jolt before revising it downward.

The center said the quake was felt 244 km (152 miles) east in Salt Lake City and as far away as Boise, Idaho, roughly 300 km north of the epicenter.

Reports in Salt Lake said buildings had swayed in the city's downtown area.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported on its website that the seven-story building which houses the newspaper shook in an east-to-west fashion with light fixtures swaying between six inches to a foot.

"All of a sudden the floor under me started shaking and things on my desk started rattling and all the hanging plants in my office - and throughout the building, were swaying," a worker in another building told the paper.

NEIC scientist John Bellini said while the earthquake's magnitude was unusually strong for the area, they are not unheard of.

"California would typically get earthquakes of this size more frequently but the Utah, Nevada region does have these every five or 10 years or so."
