Micmac
Girlfriend coulda got off more'n $50.00 NORWICH, Conn. — Reggie Damone just wanted to jot down a phone number when he picked up what he thought was litter on a sidewalk this week. But what he found was an envelope containing a $185,000 check. Damone, who receives food stamps and works at McDonald's, said he didn't think twice about trying to cash it. Instead, the 47-year-old took a bus Monday from his Jewett City home to a bank and returned the check to the niece of the landlord to whom the check was written. She thanked Damone with a $50 bill. Damone said that although he knew $185,000 could pay his rent and other bills for a long time, he was never tempted to try to cash it and splurge. He says he remembered his mother's words: If you take something, you lose three times that amount — and if you do something good, something good comes back to you. Pop
Norwich is 10 minutes to Foxwoods and ten minutes to Mohican Sun. He'll get further with the 50 in hand walking to Jewett city than with 185k and a limo to the bright lights.

There are folks about that woulda cashed that check for somewhat less than the listed amount, but one hell of a lot more than $50.

indian T
I can't see much point of trying to cash a check that's not mine. Just don't matter how much for which it's written. You got that right. If it wasn't made out to you, it's not yours...period. Here's a short story about some cash I found. It wasn't much, but it wasn't mine either. I was finishing a job in an apt., when I opened the trash can to throw away some trash. In the trash can was $400 cash. I took it out of the garbage and left it on the table with a note about where I found it. I didn't get so much as a thank you from the woman, but it didn't matter. There's no-way I could have spent a dime of that money without feeling guilty.
Eraserhead
I can't see much point of trying to cash a check that's not mine. Just don't matter how much for which it's written. True, but the welfare guy rode a bus to the wealthy to return the check, he coulda thrown it away, ripped it up, but he sought them out.... good Karma coming his way!!!! XV62
T and Terry, yall's right on there talkin' about $400 or even a few thousand belonging to some poor workin' stiff like ninety-nine percent of us that would be unlucky enough to lose it. When it comes to Big Bizness, ie., insurance companies, banks, the f'IRS, especially the oil companies, whoever fits the bill in those catagories, fuk'em. That was $185,000 rent check. It woulda depended who it was from and who it was to 'fore I decided to be a boy scout. Some oil/insurance company to a Leona Helmsley type? I'd been lookin for a shylock for about 25 cents on the dollar. Now the crankheads out stealin' the tools out of my truck I make my honest livin' with, I'll take a little of that arabic law. Cut their hands off. Call it a double standard, whatever. 'Course that's just my opinion.
2blackbelts
Granted, $50 was a rather lousy reward. However, trying to cash a $185,000 check, made out to someone else would have landed his poor butt in the pokey. No matter what he did, he could not have cashed the check, and trying to do so, for anyone, only spells more trouble. He did the right thing. 2 bb
