homer
i rarely read time...almost never, unless i'm at the dr. but, the MOY has nothing to do with being good or bad (to "our" standards), but is just about one person's influence over tha past 12 months...there's probably more than a few many of us wouldn't agree with for one reason or another.. eric

Pop
I don't think we have ever had a President in the good old US of America that can come close to the insane love for old Vladimir that the russkis got. He's a friggin god to them peeps. Like somewhere upwards of 80% approval ratings. I got buds live over there building dairy processing plants and they tell me Putin walks on water to them Russians. They don't give a hoot in hell about a free press or personal liberty. They were eatin cold tater soup and rancid cheese about a decade back due to the "democratization" of Russkiland and they ain't forgot the taste. They drivin Buicks and Harleys and goin to Burger King and whatnot now and makin respectable rubles for the Russki lifestyle and they are happy as all get out. Yer gonna have a hard time findin a Muscovite that don't see the reason why Vlad the KGB king shouldn't go right ahead and change they constitution so's he can run for another term. He done pissed off some of the loyal by steppin back and endorsing his little buddy to run for the office insteada manipulating the constitution. Now clearly he's still gonna run the show but Pop give him credit for makin the decision not to tear they constitution apart to hold onto the big chair. Whenever W said he could see into Vlads heart I just hadda shake my head. I dunno what the fuck George thought he seen in there but Pop is here to tell ya that that SOB is the real deal. He didn't need no OJT to be a coldhearted motherfucker. It were in his resume from the git go.
Brock
funny how in the dictatorships where cruelty is king the people ALWAYS LOVE THEIR LEADER....I have studied it in Russia, FSU, USSR, CHINA, NORTH KOREA, CAMBODIA, VENEZUELA, IRAN.......easy to show love when you know your neighbors and family members can likely be giving information to Politburo. You want to get an idea of the love of their leader...then visit the dark bars where the young college kids hang out...or the late night discussion groups at the local theater....usually get a different opinion when you catch people in private among a sympathetic audience or behind the cloak of the privacy where they feel their identity and views are safe. He headed KGB and was ruthless...became president and did not disband KGB but renamed it and actually grew it larger.... Guess it is like anything else....some like you and some hate you....beware of the person that everyone loves or everyone hates....something else is going on if you find this to be true. what do you mean no US President...what about Teddy R. or Ronald R. hahahahahahahaha
Pop
I'm tellin ya Brock, you give a man a chicken wing and a Wii and he don't care if you shoot every reporter you see. Them russians, especially the younger ones have no recollection of the bad old days of soviet tyranny. They do have a recollection of the fall of empire and hungry cold years of massive unemployment and the western carpetbaggers reconstruction in the name of democratization. The living memory of Russia is pre Vlad sucking bigtime comrade, Vladtime, party on dudeski. I figger they all good with democratic institutions as long as they turn the knob and heat comes out the vent and somebody validates parking. POWER STROKE
If he is so great and Russia such a utopia, where are all the people wanting to get in there? Here's an idea, Why don't we pick up all the illegals crossing our boarders, put 'em on planes, ships, whatever and ship 'em to Russia. "The Russian economy is today best described as a market economy backed by a still imperfect rule of law. A significant segment of the nation's most valued assets is in the hands of the state or of Kremlin allies. Political control has been reinforced through control of the major media operations, with most of the remainder "encouraged" to censor themselves. Putin and his policies remain immensely popular. Objections from the Russian public are few; apparently the chaos of Yeltsin's democracy - including financial defaults that savaged people's savings - left a residue of profound discomfort. A poll in 2006 reported that almost half of the Russian people value material well-being over freedom and human rights: democracy and freedom of speech are not high priorities. Given a choice between the democratic freedoms and economic instability of the Yeltsin years and the stability and authoritarianism that have emerged under Putin, for now most Russians prefer Putin." Alan Greenspan It's not his strength that has done him well, it is the insecurity of the generations brought up under communist rule. Political upheaval under Yeltzin had everything to do with the people of Russia and lack of understanding that a successful free market economy does not happen overnight. Yes, you can throw in private ownership corruption, criminal elements, political underhandedness and such, but this exists everywhere. Generations fed by communist or socialist rule will not be able to deal with a capitalist free market economy within 10 years of the change, and the Russians are the proof. Putin has created something just short of Stalin's Russia, and has certainly modeled himself after Stalin. Let us hope that this never becomes the case in our country, A poll in 2006 reported that almost half of the Russian people value material well-being over freedom and human rights: democracy and freedom of speech are not high priorities. What scares me is that there are leaders in our country, some vying for the next presidency that would love to see these numbers.
Dr. Mark
First, on the "Man Of the Year" thing...they always give it to the individual who most influenced world events that year, not the nicest, or the best leader, or whatever. I'm not sure I agree with that choice, Valdimir Putin, even based on that criteria, but I can't think of anyone else who fits the bill. George W. doesn't, unfortunately. Events seem to influence HIM, not the other way around. So, maybe they're right, on that account. It's all an opinion anyway, and reporters opinions have virtually no value to me anyhow. BUT... Pop and Powerstroke understand the situation perfectly. The Russians do NOT think like us. Never have. Western politicians have repeatedly made the mistake of thinking the Russians want freedom and democracy. WRONG. What Russians want is food, a home, some western-style consumer goods some vodka, and stability. They (mostly) do NOT give a rat's ass about freedom of the press, freedom of speech, or anything else, as long as someone is meeting their basic needs, and maybe a bit more on the side. Like Pop said..."Party on, dude-ski!". Russia has a long, nasty history of deprivation and hardship. Anyone who can keep the wolves from the door, and maybe poke the West in the eye occasionally, well, he da MAN!! So, Putin is VERY much the man. Don't doubt it for a second. -Doc

Guy I know GOT him one of them mail-order brides. Ukranian chick. He's a doctor, little, goofy-looking guy, kind of crosseyed. Spent him a good chunk of coin to pick out this really FINE-ass big blonde girl. Has her sign this prenup so she can't divorce him and take his bread, all that. She gets here, he treats her like a QUEEN...she falls head over heels for his ass! Never had a guy treat her like a lady before... Talk to him about a year later, he's still crazy about her, she's still crazy about him, but he wants me to give him a supply of Cialis, B12 and testosterone injections. Seems that all Mrs. Svetlana wants to do is drink, shop and fuck...and homey is having him a hard time keeping up! -Doc
