leaf001
Unfortunatley, those 3 fatalities were probably alcohol related.

Falcon
UPDATE: Eight killed in recent motorcycle crashes - 5 during official Rally By Tom Lawrence, Black Hills Pioneer RAPID CITY - The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is over, but at several people didn't live to see the end of it. Five people died in motorcycle accidents during the Rally, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. The seven-day rally officially ended Sunday. The patrol said there were 86 injury accidents, 329 DWI arrests, 55 felony drug arrests, 259 misdemeanor drug arrests, seizure of 18 vehicles for drug possession or altered serial numbers, and one concealed weapons arrest. The numbers are for an area that includes Sturgis, Rapid City, the southern Black Hills and the Badlands. Here is a list of the people killed during the Rally: * A 2002 Honda trike traveling east on Interstate 90 driven by Paul Sales, 60, of Wendell, Idaho, traveled down a steep embankment seven miles east of Sturgis at 10:47 p.m. Aug. 9, ejecting both the driver and passenger, Hazel Miller, 58, of Hagerman, Idaho. Miller was pronounced dead on the scene. Sales was airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital, where he died early on Aug. 10. * Charles Lanam, 54, of Aurora, Colo., lost control of the 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was riding on Nemo Road approximately four miles west of Norris Peak Road at 9:15 a.m. on Aug. 9. The motorcycle went down in the south ditch and Lanam died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet. * At 7:47 p.m. Aug. 7, Chester W. Dayvolt, 46, of Louin, Mass., was driving a 2000 Harley-Davidson east on U.S. Highway 14A east of Deadwood when he collided with a deer. Dayvolt died at the scene as a result of his injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. * James E. Land, 63, of Danville, Ind., was riding a 1999 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the Badlands Loop Road about 15 miles south of Wall at 4:55 p.m. Aug. 4. The motorcycle entered the ditch and flipped end over end several times. Land died as a result of his injuries while being flown to Rapid City Regional Hospital by Life Flight helicopter. Land was wearing a helmet. The statistics may be a bit misleading, however, since some bikers were killed just before the Rally officially opened and at least one died shortly after it ended. Three other people were killed in motorcycle crashes in the area in late July and early to mid-August. Highway Patrol Lt. Kevin Karley said the official Rally Tally only counts people killed from Aug. 4-12 this year. * Ricky R. Neether, 38, Gillette, Wyo., was traveling east on S.D. Highway 44 at 4:45 p.m. July 28 about three miles west of Johnson Siding on a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle. The motorcycle drifted into the westbound lane of travel and struck a guardrail. Neether and a passenger on the motorcycle, Brenda Meece, 41, also of Gillette, were thrown from the cycle and died at the scene. Neither was wearing a helmet. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. * Richard Albert Milliken, 44, of North Fort Myers, Fla., was killed at 12:10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, while traveling east on U.S. Highway 212 about six miles east of Faith on a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle when the cycle left the roadway and entered the south ditch and flipped over. Milliken was not wearing a helmet and suffered head injuries. He died at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Karley said the smaller Rally was a good thing for local law enforcement. "It was a good Rally for us," Karley said. "There was one less fatal accident and fewer injury accidents. And there were no serious traffic problems." He said the number of arrests were about the same as last year. Rapid City Police Department Lt. David Walton said the Rally caused few problems in Rapid City. I saw a nasty accident on the way back from Rushmore. A white Sporty under a car, and someone being worked on by E.M.S in the ditch. I'm glad they're not on the list. bri-an
Back safe and sound It was quite the adventure seeing it was the first time i had been to Sturgis...Wow it was worth the 2784klm to get there! The one thing that alarmed me most was the deer!! (Camped in HILL CITY) Not anything like the deer up here in Northern ONt. ...I mean one burst on the throddle will scare em off...down there,...couldn't believe they were grazing on the sides of the road with no interest of the hundreds of bike's passing by!! when Bambi decides that the grass looks greener on the other side of the road...well...he goes for it!! Second night of being there we stopped to help some folks that just had a collision with one (at dusk) two bikes ...one deer..thankfully they were all right ...they both ended up on the soft grassy area of the shoulder. I noted that both riders were wearing full leather's and helmets One of the guy's said he slid after being ejected about 20 feet across the road...onto the shoulder...onto the grass!...( his leathers save him from being Hamburger) Well thats part of the package, risk is always staring ya down... (but it's all worth it!!) My time there was fantastic! The folks were all friendly and went out of there way to ensure a great stay!! Total mileage of this venture 8460 klms Total on Chief now 140365 klms <-------still going strong!! It saddens me to hear of the fallen riders....and i do see why things like that happen...especially in Sturgis. p.s. I only saw about 10 indians while i was there...2 of them were vintage..(1940's) kinda makes ya feel like ya got something very special

I stayed at the Crooked Creek Campground in Hill City. Didn't see another indian the entire time I was there. Put 2504 miles on the bike and she was the center of attention where ever I parked her. Glad to see that the riders on this forum made it home safe and sound. My heart goes out to the ones that were injured and the families of the ones that didn't make it back. Sturgis was awesome as it was my first time there. Would like to go back in June and really enjoy the beauty of the land. Shanda
indiankris
I only saw 4 Indians the whole time, and one was a vintage Chief outside Budda tattoo. I was kinda surprised. Kris
