stu
So hard to pick a greatest. The bands from the 60's and 70's are without a doubt head and shoulders above any bands to come later... But if I had to pick one.... Pink Floyd.... followed closely by Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Yes, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Steppenwolf, Cream, Traffic, Allman Brothers, Jefferson Airplane... wow so many... to many to list..... paolabob
Those are ALL classics and you are correct there is nothing that compares today. Pink Floyd definatley right there. Both still have an audiance even the teens today still dig em.

Colorado Rider
Greatest rock band? For cerebral rock I would go with Pink Floyd followed by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. I don't know how you would caterogize the Beatles, but they were one talented and prolific group of musicians. I still like to listen to Deep Purple's Machine Head when I'm driving. But being able to see Led Zep perform when they weren't too bombed to sing or play would put them as the greatest. Jimmy Page was in his own league. Yep, I'd have to go with Led Zeppelin! Colorado Rider
Forgot about Black Sabbath....I still listen to them. They just seemed like they hit a low ceiling after a few albums after Masters of Reality...
indian al
Thats not an easy question. Lynard Skynard is always a good bet weather your driving or partying. For metal I would have to say Black Sabbath. Crosby Stills Nash & Young for folksy / acoustical music. The Ramones for punk. Merle or Johnny for country. Mind you this is not set in stone. I got too many favorites. I guess I am a music whore. Al
Last Resort
LOL I will stay out of this one for the most part But you are all showing that people think what happened during their time, within their scope of knowledge, is what is important and what is right. Global Warming anyone? Same thought process. They forget about history and why the Vikings traveled where they did. Why their burial grounds in Greenland are under permafrost today. LOL Remember Little Richard? Jerry Lee Lewis? Chuck Berry? Or how about The Velvet Underground? Iggy Pop? You guys are naming Pop Bands. Rock bands do not spend more then a few days to record albums. Rock and Roll ain't about perfection … IT'S ABOUT PASSION!!!!! LOL

zig zag man
I work in artist transportation at one of the biggest Americana festivals in the U.S. I just met John Paul Jones in May and had a 20 minute one on one conversation with him. Man what a laid back, soft spoken, unassuming, humble guy. We talked about the Zeppelin days but mainly what he's into now. He's mostly playing the mandolin these days and holy shit can he play that thing. He jammed with several bands but the most memorable for me was when he sat in with The Duhks, a great young band from Canada. They wailed on "Whole Lotta Love" with JPJ on mandolin! He's still in touch with Page and Plant and they even jam together on the rare occasion that they're together. But when I asked the $64,000.00 question that I already knew the answer to, he responded "never". Check out his website at johnpauljones.com and if he's playing near you, check him out. No good music since 1975 (except maybe Pearl Jam and Nickleback depending how I feel) The Captain got the entire light crew at the Academy of Music in NYC to dance nekkid on the roof inna middle of winter. Don't ask how. Yorma taught my niece to play ( he has a school), There's a Fat Man in the Bathtub and it's Pop, Ihear ya moan, I hear ya moan, Ihear ya moan. My bro G sessions out of Sunland and plays bass off and on with Canned Heat and Eric Burdon who you forgot to mention. James Montgomery gave me my first line of cocaine which makes him responsible for a whole lot of bullshit. I saw Elvin a couple years back and he did a great tune called "What the Hell is Goin on". Had to have it so I bought the CD after the show and there he is signin trinkets. My bud sez go for it so like some teenybopper we standin in line. Whenever I get up there Elvin sez " Whatcher name my man?" whilst he grabs the CD. I tell him Pop and when he gives me the fuckin thing back he scrawled "Have a good life Bob from Elvin Bishop" on the cover. Fuckin Bob. I said to him "motherfucker you didn't get outta the seventies in any better shape than me." Lest we forget, Humble Pie, Ten Years After, Savoy Brown, King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Edgar Winters Whitetrash, Johny Winter, Poco, NRPS, Wet Willie, Mason Proffit, Commander Cody and the Last Planet Airmen, The Ramones and of course ZAPPA.
