Left Vegas around 10:30 this morning. Immediately ran into a thundercloud. If it had been a little later in the day, it would have been refreshing. As it was, it was just wet and cold. Crossed the northwestern tip of Arizona for about 25 miles before entering Utah. Very first sight of the state was a lightening storm in the offing. Very dark sky. Looked ominously like where I was headed. Stopped in St. George for lunch before continuing on. The wind, which had been favorable up to this point, shifted into a very stiff head wind. Had to downshift to third gear for some of the hill climbing. Sure enough, I was headed right into the lightening. Arrived at Zion National Park around 2:30 (lost an hour because of the time change). The rain was steady but not intense. What was intense was the sound of thunder echoing through Zion Canyon. Amazing. Pitched my tent and sat in it for about an hour until the rain stopped. Just like that, the sky was clear blue. They're working on the road in the canyon so everybody has to take the shuttle to road's end. Personally, I like it that way. It's a small road in a narrow canyon and things can get really bogged down when the tourists are out in force. I hope they make the shuttle a permanent thing. Got some nice pictures but I'll have to wait for more favorable circumstances to post them. I'm in an internet cafe' outside of the park right now so I only have access to a monitor. My laptop's back at the campsite. Springdale, the town outside of Zion, has grown considerably since I was here last in 1991. I'd have been lucky to find a pay phone back then. Now, I'm sipping latte' in an internet cafe'. I head out to Bryce Canyon National Park tomorrow which is only 89 miles from Zion. Bike's still doing fine. Gotta go, my time's expiring. Plus, the IMAX starts in a few minutes.
