Programming the Thunder-Heart Module
 1. Set up your laptop computer (or desktop computer for those without laptops) next to your bike within the Smartlink cable's reach (i.e. 6 ft.) and turn it on. 2. Remove the seat (not necesary on the Chief) a) remove the two large hex head screws that attach to the frame (near the lowest point on the seat) b) remove the hex head screw that attaches to the rear fender c) slide the seat rearward an inch or two to dislodge the forward seat tang d) carefully lift the seat off the bike 3. Insert the 9-pin D-sub end of the SmartLink cable into the serial port on the computer a) the serial port is typically on the rear of the computer and looks like a "D" that has been turned in it's side.  There will be 2 rows of pins: 5 near the large side of the "D" and 4 near the small side. b) most computers now have only one serial port but if you have a choice of two, try to determine which is COM 1 and use it rather than COM 2 7. Insert the other end of the SmartLink cable (it looks like a P/S 2 connector) into the Thunder-Heart module AFTER wiping the dirt off 8. Open the SmartLink program a) left click the "START" button a) move the cursor up to "Programs" b) move the cursor over to "Smartlink OE" c) move the cursor over to "Smartlink OE" d) left click to open program 9. NOTES: 1. Be advised that altering your ignition in any way constitutes grounds for termination of your Indian warranty! 2. The stock ignition curve can be flashed back into the Thunder-Heart ignition module at any time by substituting the name "untitled.slk" wherever the instructions say "Ultimate.slk".  However, in step 9n left click "No"!
The "Readers Digest" version:
(Note: it's easier to use a laptop computer to update the ignition curve)
After you  install the program, update the "smartlink.exe" file with the one that I
attached to this E-mail.  Save the E-mail attachment (i.e.
 smartlink.exe) to
 this path: C:\Program Files\Thunder Heart Performance\Smart Link OE.  A
dialog box will pop up that says the file already exists and asks
 you if you
want to overwrite it.  Respond by left clicking on the "Yes"
 button and you
are done.  This newer version will allow you to link to 2002/2003 and
 earlier modules.
I have made available all of the ignition curves that I have
 created at this
site:  www.geocities.com/bmcvicke   Here is a brief summary:

Ultimate - good all around curve for '99 - '01 Indians with S$S engines.

Harley Hunter - best performance curve for '99 - '01 Indians with S&S
engines (not as forgiving as the Ultimate curve for two-up riding, heavy
loads...etc.)

Ultimate PP02 - first pass at a performance curve for the 2002 Chief with
 the PowerPlus 100.
Last but not least, you will need a cable.  Call Brooke at ThunderHeart
Performance (615-672-8811) and ask for a SmartLink cable.  The price is
around 25.00 dollars shipped.  Or, if you want to build your own
 curves you
can order the Profire software kit (comes wth the cable) under Drag
 Specialties P/N DS-242442.
